Ohio's distinctive flag, designed by John Eisenmann in 1901, is the only non-rectangular state flag in the U.S. Its swallowtail shape, reminiscent of a guidon, features red and white stripes symbolizing the state's roads and waterways, and a blue triangle representing its hills and valleys. At the hoist end, a white-bordered red disk signifies the buckeye seed, Ohio's state tree, encircled by a white "O" for Ohio. Seventeen stars honor Ohio as the 17th state admitted to the Union.
