The flag of Alsace, known as "Rot un Wiss" in the Alsatian dialect, features two horizontal stripes of red and white. This design dates back to the 11th century, originating from the banner of Gérard d'Alsace, Duke of Lorraine. The red and white colors are also present in the coats of arms of Alsatian cities such as Strasbourg, Mulhouse, and Sélestat. In 1949, the flag was replaced by a new design representing the union of the two départements of Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin, but the traditional Rot un Wiss flag remains a symbol of Alsace's heritage and identity.
